Texas dad shoots teens trying to steal car with kids inside: cops

A Texas father fatally shot two attempted robbery suspects who approached his SUV with his wife and two toddlers inside, police said Monday.

The husband and wife were arriving home just after midnight on Sunday evening when the two teenage suspects approached the vehicle. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the suspects attempted to open the rear door of the vehicle, where the two children were seated.

“The adult male feared for the safety of his family and fired shots and struck the two suspects,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote in a statement. “The woman was driving and left after the shooting to get away from the suspects.”

“A car stopped after the shooting led by a [unknown] a man believed to be with the suspects. The two injured suspects were taken to hospital by private vehicles. The two suspects are 16-year-old teenagers. Both would be stable and in good condition,” Gonzalez added.

Police have not released any information that could identify the father or his family.

Police have opened an investigation into the incident, but say the father was within his rights to open fire.
