Tesla recalls thousands of vehicles over heat pump issue

DETROIT (AP) — Tesla is recalling nearly 27,000 vehicles in the United States because cabin heater systems may not defrost the windshield quickly enough, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

The latest in a series of recent recalls affects certain 2021 and 2022 Model 3s, S and Xs, and certain 2020 to 2022 Model Ys.

Tesla says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

Documents released Wednesday say the electric vehicle maker will send a software update online to fix the problem.

US safety regulators say a software error can cause a valve in vehicle heat pumps to open unintentionally, trapping refrigerant inside the evaporator.

This may reduce defrost performance.
