Terry McLaurin will quietly earn a fortune in Washington

The Washington Commanders have a receiver who joins Deebo Samuel and AJ Brown in wanting a better contract.

That player is wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

He comes from the same draft class as Brown and Samuel.

All three players are essential players for their team.

However, all three players feel they are not being paid as they deserve.

In McLaurin’s case, he can quietly make a fortune with a new contract in Washington.

Commanders best kept secret

Most NFL fans haven’t heard much about McLaurin until now.

The former Ohio State star was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

With consecutive 1,000+ yard seasons, Commanders got McLaurin a steal.

However, his receptions were weak compared to other receivers.

2021 saw him with just 77 receptions and 130 targets.

Of the 53 missed targets, he only dropped five passes.

He therefore gets a good share of the passes thrown during the season.

But he has a new starting quarterback in Washington who could help those numbers.

Could Wentz give McLaurin a breakout 2022 season?

Let’s face the facts, the Commanders haven’t had a great quarterback game in 2021.

In fact, they’ve gone through several quarterbacks under center over the course of the season.

However, the quarterback’s inconsistency stemmed from the injuries sustained by these players.

But it still hurt the team, and possibly McLaurin’s stats.

Now he has Carson Wentz passing the ball to him.

Although Wentz is not a Tom Brady or a Patrick Mahomes, he is a good starting quarterback.

He protects the ball on passes, throwing just seven interceptions last season.

His completion percentage also increased last season.

Those things give Commanders and McLaurin hope for a breakout season in 2022.

However, this breakout season hinges on the health of Wentz and McLaurin.

Could McLaurin’s past concussion issues hamper him in 2022?

While McLaurin was the Commanders’ leading receiver in 2021, he suffered a few injuries over the course of the season.

The most alarming injury he suffered was a concussion.

During his NFL career, he suffered two concussions, the first occurring during his rookie season in 2019.

The last concussion he suffered came against the Dallas Cowboys in their December 2021 game.

Concussions are extremely serious injuries that have brought many changes to the NFL.

The players who most often have concussions are quarterbacks, but receivers also suffer from them.

Concussions plagued McLaurin during his NFL career, causing him to miss games.

His 2019 concussion caused him to miss a game, as did his 2021 concussion.

He will need better self-protection if he wants 2022 to be his best year.

He’s Washington’s best option

The COs did nothing to get Wentz’s former teammate TY Hilton to bolster his receiving corps.

That now leaves them with McLaurin to be their number one.

With 130 targets last season, he’s clearly Washington’s No. 1 receiver.

In 2022, he will get those goals from Wentz.

However, he must catch these targets.

While McLaurin deserves a better contract in 2022, he needs to show he can improve with a better quarterback passing the ball to him.
