Teofimo Lopez Insists He Won’t Grant Vasiliy Lomachenko Revenge: “We’re Watching Josh Taylor” | Boxing News

Teofimo Lopez mocked Vasiliy Lomachenko’s chase for a rematch by saying “he’s fighting my leftovers” – and turns his own attention to Josh Taylor.

Lopez ended Lomachenko’s prestigious reign as the world number one lightweight by sealing an impressive points victory to unify the IBF, WBA and WBO belts last year.

He will defend his titles against mandatory challenger George Kambosos Jr in New York on Monday, October 4.

Lopez beat Lomachenko last year

Lopez told Sky Sports he had no plans to risk his status as the king of the division again against his old rival: “Even the man himself said it, even Lomachenko has it. said.

“He’s fighting my leftovers, trying to redeem himself.

“It’s cute that everyone thinks he’s going to have me again.

“The way I see it now? We’ve got past that. We’re looking at bigger and better things, like Josh Taylor.

“There will be no revenge.

“If I had lost they would never have given me the opportunity, so I’m not doing it.”

Lomachenko recently stopped Masayoshi Nakatani in nine rounds, an opponent Lopez beat on points.

The Ukrainian, previously celebrated as the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer, is next set to face Richard Commey, another former enemy of Lopez.

Lopez said of stepping up a division to fight Taylor, the undisputed welterweight champion: “The guy can talk whatever he wants, but everyone feels my energy when I get up.

“I have to eliminate Kambosos Jr.

“I don’t want people to back down.”

“I want to show you what you haven’t seen or seen since the ’70s and’ 80s. This era of boxing is rocky now, so I want to take it back to its roots.

“I’m going to knock him out. I don’t like this guy.

“I understand. He plays a role, plays tough. But disrespecting my family?

Ryan Garcia is part of the new era of the “Four Kings”

Lopez is one of an exciting quartet of undefeated young American lightweights alongside Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis.

But he insists his rivals haven’t won a comparison with the glorious generation of “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran.

“Everyone wants to bring back that era of fighters, but now we have YouTubers fighting,” Lopez said.

“These guys aren’t the Four Kings, they haven’t fought a high caliber fighter yet. They haven’t fought in the top 10 or the top five.

“I’m not afraid of anyone. I don’t dodge or dodge anyone.”

Lopez, promoted by Top Rank whose fights are broadcast exclusively by Sky Sports in the UK, said of his UK debut: “Absolutely. The winner takes it all. When I get that opportunity in the UK , I won’t miss it. “
