Teofimo Lopez has expressed his dissatisfaction with boxing policy regarding the current situation which sees multiple WBC titles in his weight class.
The WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO lightweight champion insists he deserves to be recognized as the undisputed king of his division after dethroning Vasyl Lomachenko last year, although many still deny him.
Lopez first won the IBF belt in December 2019 and then agreed to jump straight into a unification with WBA, WBC and WBO champion Lomachenko.
However, before that, Loma was outclassed by the WBC to become their “franchise” champion.
This meant that “interim” champion Devin Haney was outclassed to take Loma’s place as standard world champion.
Fast forward to this point and there are two WBC lightweight champions – “franchise” champion Lopez and standard champion Haney.
As a result, there are still plenty of disputes over Lopez’s undisputed status – something that certainly irritates him.
He told talkSPORT.com: “You know they did this to me at the 2015 US Olympic Trials.
“In 2015, I won the US Olympic Trials for the US for the Olympics.
“For the Rio 2016 Olympics. I won it, I won it, in Reno, Nevada.
“Go back and see the list – Shakur Stevenson, Nico Hernandez, Antonio Vargas, Gary Russell. Teofimo Lopez was on that list.
“And you know what they did with it?”
“They gave me a fucking shitty medal – gold, but it wasn’t gold – it said, ‘132lbs winner’.
“They pushed me to the side and then they put this other guy named Carlos Balderas, they put him in there, in the ring, while I had to watch after I won the Olympic Trials.
“[I was] cry at 18, see them doing the political bullshit they do in this sport.
“So the same is happening today. I won it, I won it, I did what I had to do against all odds, the winner takes it all.
“And once again it happened, once again it happened.
“I won it all and somehow they just put a little asshole in there.”
