Tejaswin Shankar defeats former world champion in Boston

2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Tejaswin Shankar won the men’s high jump competition at the 2023 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, USA on Saturday. He beat 38-year-old Bahamas native Donald Thomas, the 2007 world champion, who settled for second place.
Four-time Olympian Donald Thomas won the high jump title at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. There were only four competitors in the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix high jump competition. It included American Darryl Sullivan, who placed third with a season-best mark of 2.19m.
Shankar cleared jumps of 2.14 meters, 2.19 meters, 2.23 meters and 2.26 meters on his first attempt. In his final efforts, he attempted to set a new national indoor record of 2.30 meters, but was unsuccessful. Tejaswin Shankar set the national indoor high jump record in 2018 at 2.28 meters. Tejaswin Shankar also holds the men’s national high jump record in India with a height of 2.29 meters.
At Birmingham 2022, 24-year-old Tejaswin Shankar won bronze in the men’s high jump with a leap of 2.22 meters to earn India their first Commonwealth Games medal.
