Teenagers shot dead at post-prom party attended by hundreds: police

Three Des Moines, Iowa teens were injured early Sunday morning after a shooting at an after-prom party, police said.

The incident happened after a fight broke out at the party, which had at least 200 people in attendance, when a group of uninvited people arrived, according to local news station WHO13. A 17-year-old woman and two 18-year-old men were shot. They were taken to hospital and are expected to survive, reported WHO13. Police are investigating the shooting, but have not yet made any arrests.

In a letter sent to parents, Roosevelt High School in Des Moines Principal Steven Schappaugh reiterated that “we believe none of the injuries are life-threatening.”

“Unfortunately, there was a shooting that took place last night at a ball after a party that injured three Roosevelt students,” he said, according to WHO13, which published the letter on its website.

In a separate incident last month, several people were shot outside a Waffle House in Atlanta, Georgia. After a fight broke out outside the restaurant, someone opened fire, hitting five teenagers. All victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were in stable condition. However, two of the victims allegedly hijacked a valet vehicle at gunpoint to drive to a nearby hospital, news station WGCL reported.

In Texas in March, at least three people were injured in a shooting during spring break on a beach. At the time, law enforcement officials believed the shooting took place after a fight broke out on the beach. Following the incident, a 30-year-old man was left in critical condition, while two teenagers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Also in March, four Texas teenagers were shot dead outside a birthday party. At the time, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said an altercation took place in a parking lot when “several suspects began shooting at each other.” The sheriff said following the shooting, a 17-year-old was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Of the three others injured, at least one was taken to hospital in critical condition.
