Teenager shot and killed in street takeover in Willowbrook

A teenager was fatally shot Sunday night during a street takeover in Willowbrook, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives responded to a report of a shooting and street race in the 13400 block of Mettler Avenue around 11:57 p.m., according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies found an unconscious boy, aged 15 to 20, with gunshot wounds, police said.

The boy was pronounced dead at a local hospital, authorities said. Police do not believe the incident is gang-related.

No suspect or vehicle information is available at this time.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the LA County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Office at (323) 890-5500.

Los Angeles officials have tried to crack down on street racing and takeovers after seeing an increase during the pandemic. Los Angeles lawmakers are considering passing an ordinance that would criminalize the promotion, incitement or encouragement of such events online.

Compton, near Willowbrook, spent $4,000 installing pavement markers called Botts Dots at intersections popular for street takeovers in the hopes it would discourage the practice by making the road bumpy.

Botts Dots helped curb street racing in Lynwood and Paramount.
