Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) ‘s already shaky excuse to travel to Cancun as his state suffered from one of its worst disasters continues to crumble.
Cruz first blamed his daughters, saying that they had asked to leave with friends because there was no power and school was over and that he “just wanted to be a good father”. Cruz claimed he planned to go home immediately after dropping them off, then admitted that he actually intended to stay over the weekend as his constituents suffered from freezing temperatures, massive power outages. and unsafe drinking water.
On Sunday, Axios reported that Cruz had invited one of his own friends for the trip. The website said David Panton, who was Cruz’s roommate at Princeton and Harvard Law, joined the family at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancun.
Cruz hurried home when word broke about his trip. Panton, however, remained in Cancun, Axios reported.
Cruz tries to save face since this unfortunate trip by making a series of appearances on television and by showing up late at relief events. Still, the pressure on Cruz is growing: The Houston Chronicle called on him on Friday to resign for his “senseless, callous and sadly revealing of his approach to work for the past eight years.”
