Tech company blames recruiter for ‘whites only’ job posting

A U.S. technology company says an India-based recruiter was responsible for a job posting that said only “white” people born in the United States should apply — and agreed to a federal settlement.

The Justice Department said in a statement Thursday that Arthur Grand, an IT services company specializing in government contracts, agreed to pay a $7,500 civil penalty and reform its hiring practices after issuing a discriminatory job offer.

According to the department, the March 2023 posting stated that the position “limited eligible applicants to only U.S.-born citizens (white) who are within 60 miles of Dallas, Texas (do not share with applicants ). »

“It is shameful that in the 21st century we continue to see employers use ‘whites only’ and ‘US-born only’ job postings to exclude otherwise eligible applicants of color,” the statement said. Deputy Attorney General Kristen Clarke, civil rights officer at the Department of Justice. “I share the public outrage over Arthur Grand’s appalling and discriminatory ban on job applicants based on their citizenship status, national origin, color and race.”

Arthur Grand did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the settlement, the company said the job posting was created by a “disgruntled” recruiter in India who sought to embarrass the company. He denied authorizing this publication or intending to dissuade non-US citizens from applying.

Arthur Grand signed a separate agreement with the Department of Labor.

The investigation was conducted by the Department of Justice’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Division.
