Tavares Nets Hat Trick in Flyers Loss to Leafs

For only the second time this season, the Leaflets scored the first goal of the game Wednesday night in Toronto. In the end, it didn’t equal a successful night.

Toronto quickly erased the deficit with two goals in the first period and added two more in the third in the Flyers’ 5-2 loss to the maple leaves.

The first period features several penalties and after the Flyers killed two Toronto power plays, they were able to hit for the first goal of the game at 13:09. Joel Farabee fired a timer on a stream of Travis Konecny for his third goal of the season to make it 1-0.

The Flyers could not take advantage of their only power play of the period a few seconds later. Toronto got its third power play of the period shortly after and took advantage of it. Auston Matthews was stopped on a great opportunity to score from the crenel by Felix Sandstrombut managed to get his own rebound and score his fourth goal of the season to even things up in one shot with 3:20 left in the period.

Less than two minutes later, John Tavares unleashed a one-timer from deep in the area that hit Konecny’s stick on the drive in, beating Sandstrom to make it 2-1 with 1:27 left in the period.

The Flyers had four power plays in the second period with a chance to tie the game. They struggled and couldn’t capitalize in the middle frame, keeping the margin at 2-1. In 40 minutes, the shots were 30-15 in Toronto.

It took the Leafs less than three minutes to extend the lead. A lucky traffic bounce in the slot machine went to Zach Aston Reesewho was wide open to bury the chance and make it 3-1 with his first goal of the season.

On their sixth power play chance of the game, the Flyers finally cashed in. Owen Tippet scored on a short side rush on Ilya Samsonov to cut lead to a new one.

But any thought of a comeback was erased when Tavares scored his second of the game with 7:18 left in the third.

Tavares capped off his big night by getting the hat trick with a power play goal with 4:37 to go.

Samsonov made 23 saves in the win. Sandstrom made 39 saves on 44 shots in the loss.

Konecny ​​had two assists for the Flyers in the loss. Tavares had four points, while Matthews, Mitch Marmerand Morgan Rielly each had two-point games.

The Flyers wrap up the road trip Saturday night when they face the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m.
