The Tamil Nadu cabinet has approved an ordinance banning online gambling in the state and it is awaiting the assent of the governor of the state before its enactment.

Cabinet-level discussions on the ordinance against online gambling have been going on in Tamil Nadu for months now. Calls to ban online gambling have intensified after reports of suicides were reported in the state over alleged online gambling-related losses.

Last year the government set up a panel led by retired High Court judge K Chandru to study the impact of online gambling. The panel’s report to the government of Tamil Nadu advocated a gambling ban, drug rehabilitation.

This is not the first time the government has passed an order banning online gambling. In 2021, an earlier order against online gambling was overturned by the Madras High Court because it said a blanket ban on online gambling was “excessive and disproportionate”.

Recently, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin promised a tougher law against online gambling that would pass the test of legality.
