talkSPORT transfer log: Chelsea considering move for Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus, Christian Eriksen set to leave Brentford with Tottenham return on the cards

Our man in the know, Alex Crook, brings you all the latest transfer news, rumors and information ahead of what’s shaping up to be a busy summer window…

Chelsea target Juventus star for defensive reinforcement

Chelsea have identified Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt as a priority target as Thomas Tuchel looks to rebuild his defensive line for next season.

Chelsea are one of the teams looking to nab Premier League champions Man City next season, and have seen their transfer coffers swell with the club’s takeover by US billionaire Todd Boehly of Roman Abramovich.

The west London club are now cleared to return to action after halting transfer business due to Abramovich sanctions, which exacerbated the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

The Blues will struggle to replace the defensive duo for next season but are targeting De Ligt as an option.

Crook said: “Sources in Italy suggest Chelsea are interested in Matthijs de Ligt at Juventus.

“I think Jules Kounde is their main target, I would expect that to happen, but they probably need more than one.”

De Ligt, 22, joined Juventus for around £67.5million in 2019 but struggled to live up to his high price tag in Italy.

Eriksen has options ahead of Brentford exit

It’s not the only activity in west London, with Brentford set to lose one of their key players.

Christian Eriksen joined the Bees in the January transfer window, resuming his playing career after suffering cardiac arrest while appearing for Denmark.

This terrifying incident ended his career at Inter Milan, but the former Tottenham man returned to action with Brentford on a six-month contract and quickly returned to his best form.

In fact, he’s played so well that he seems destined to move up the rankings after his brief stint with the Bees.

Crook explained: “Brentford offered him a contract to become their highest paid player.

“I know at least two Premier League clubs are interested, we think he wants to play in the Champions League.

“I’ve been told his family is quite settled in London, that would obviously link him to Tottenham, we’ve heard Everton as a potential destination.

“My hunch is that he will leave Brentford, although I know some journalists in Denmark have said he will stay because he owes them a debt of gratitude.”

Liverpool genuinely interested in Nunez

Liverpool are ready to take on rivals Manchester United for the signing of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, who has been hailed as a perfect ‘Jurgen Klopp style player’.

The 22-year-old Uruguayan, who has scored 34 goals in all competitions this season, has been touted as a possible replacement for Sadio Mane.

Mane looks increasingly likely to head out at Anfield with Bayern Munich making an opening bid worth £25million which was immediately rejected.

Liverpool can wait for a higher fee in order to fund an incoming player, who could be Nunez, who is valued at £68m.

talkSPORT transfer expert Alex Crook said: “We talked about Liverpool earlier, about Sadio Mane and would they replace him.

“Darwin Nunez, there is genuine interest from Manchester United, but a deal for him is not as close as it has been suggested in the Portuguese media.

“I received a text from a trustworthy source on Friday that Liverpool are definitely a suitor for him.”
