Goodwood Racing Tips

1h50: Hydroplane 11/1

The Coral Goodwood Handicap is contested on 2m4 1/2f suitable only for true prominent stayers on the flat, one of the few that requires a flag start rather than from the stalls.

The horse trained by Ian Williams came fifth behind Coltrane, improving his form and over 2m5f came second at Royal Ascot last month before winning at Newbury last time out, but is the heaviest weight.

But a Hydroplane rated 22 pounds lighter is able to lock in and make the most of being handicapped well under Silvestre De Sousa and that’s another Williams horse.

Finished six lengths ahead at Chester last month and it’s a similar track and certainly stays at that distance with a form of hurdles up to 2m3f.

Mellow Magic also deserves to be considered a super consistent type and if that distance can win or place at a decent price.

2.25: Berkshire Shadow 11/4

It wouldn’t be surprising to see this horse trained by Andrew Balding justify the favoritism, but at the moment his price is close to 3.

Given this return to Group 3 society, Berkshire Shadow should once again be among the finalists considering they are just under two lengths behind Coroebus at Ascot in Group 1 St James’s Palace.

This could finally be the race where he takes his third victory after picking up his second in 2021.

3:00 p.m.: Austrian theory 25/1

It’s more of a fancy one way place, at 25/1 it might be a bit overpriced.

Trained by Charlie and Mark Johnston, this colt will go just 8-9 with a 97 rating and showed that Class 2 is ideal with a win at Hamilton in June and a third at Newmarket.

Other attractive guys include Eliean Dubh, Saleymm and Jimi Hendrix in that massive 20-rider field.

3.35: Equilateral 13/2

As far as Group 2 races go, it’s pretty open with betting starting at around 4/1 for that 5f dash in the King George Qatar Stakes.

Equilateral has been frustratingly supporting recently has always been close to the finish but has never quite put its head forward.

It could be the day though, sticking with the 5f is a plus, finished just behind Raasel and Nature Strip at Sandown and Ascot respectively and staying consistent.

Finished third at Curragh last time out under Frankie Dettori and could be up there again.

4.10: The romance of the rebels 7/4

It’s the only day there isn’t a Group 1 but Rebel’s Romance is certainly suited to that area, so in a Group 3 it should warrant patronage in the scorching form of William Buick.

That’s a 40% success rate, which is unprecedented, but to do it with 50 trips is even more incredible.

Most of Buick’s wins have come from Charlie Appleby who himself has a 38% strike rate out of 32 racers.

Horse Godolphin won by almost four lengths at this distance last time out and won at 9/4 with convincing style on Class 1.

Galway Racing Tips

6:00 p.m.: Coach Carter 9/1

Trained by Gordon Elliot and ridden by Davy Russell, this gelding has great chances following his consistent form and has been eagerly awaited since his last race in April, when he beat Gaelik Coast in Perth.

The form over the last three races has read 221 and could really relish this step in the journey at 2m6f, the first time he has climbed this distance.

It’s a huge field though and it’s a theme at festivals across Friday’s cards and should be supported by a few punts, in this run that could come from Russian Diamond at 16/1 for Emmet Mullins, a course winner too.
