Jamaica Plain was full of color, music and smiles on Sunday during the inaugural Open Streets festival, which blocked off the streets to host an assortment of vendors and activities for the enjoyment of the neighborhood.

Children could be seen playing games and climbing fire trucks in the street while food trucks offered an array of dining options.

There were also plenty of cyclists and rollerbladers taking advantage of the lack of cars as music blared from the loudspeakers, The Boston Globe reported.

Open Streets Festivals are an initiative of Boston Mayor Michelle Wu to help bring business and celebration to Boston communities, while inspiring residents to imagine car-free roads.

On Sunday, Center Street in Jamaica Plain was closed from Jackson Square to the intersection with South Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mattapan will host the next Open Streets festival on August 6, when Blue Hill Avenue is closed from the intersection with Dudley Street to the intersection with Warren Avenue.

Finally, two miles of Dorchester Avenue, from the intersection with Freeport Street at Gallivan Boulevard, will be closed for this year’s final festival on September 24.

“We want to make sure everyone has the chance to experience our streets as spaces for people and places for families to have fun and be safe,” Wu told reporters on Sunday.

“We’re walking down the street all the time, but we’re still fighting with cars to do it,” said Khalilah Jones, 27, a Jamaica Plain resident. World Sunday.

“So it’s nice to see people come out, especially after the pandemic, and see the streets come to life.”
