Taiwan rejects ‘inappropriate’ comparison with Ukraine — RT World News

Taiwan’s government has sought to distance itself from claims it could be the Ukraine of tomorrow

Taipei Cabinet spokesman Lo Ping-Cheng released a statement on Monday, seeking to downplay individuals who warned that “The Ukraine of today is the Taiwan of tomorrow.

“In all areas, the two are not comparable”, Lo said, accusing people of “trying to inappropriately link Ukraine’s situation to that of Taiwan.”

The government official claimed that individuals were seeking to use “this opportunity to manipulate the so-called (subject) of ‘Ukraine today, Taiwan tomorrow'” in order to disturb “people’s morale”.

Calling the comparison ” not recommended “, the government representative outlined the positions taken by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang.

Senior Taiwanese officials have repeatedly said departments on the island should step up efforts to combat “External forces using the Ukraine-Russia conflict to wage cognitive warfare against us,” Lo said.

The Taiwanese government has not identified any unusual military activity or escalating troop movements since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, although it has raised its alert level.

On Monday, Taiwan recorded seven Chinese planes that entered its air defense zone but stayed away from the island itself, in a repeat of previous behavior the government called China “grey area” war.

Taiwan’s statement comes days after the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the island was “not Ukraine” because it remains an inalienable part of China. Speaking on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry in Beijing claimed Taiwan’s connection to China “is an indisputable legal and historical fact.”

Taiwan has maintained that it is an independent territory, firmly rejecting China’s territorial claims, saying only the people of the island can decide their own future.
