T20 World Cup 2022: “It could be a small advantage”

England captain Jos Buttler believes playing the last group game gives them a significant advantage over other teams. The keeper-beater also declared his concern to right the wrongs of the previous game.

England narrowly lost a game in the rain to Ireland by five runs (via DLS) due to their sloppy overall performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Their next game against Australia on Friday 28 October at the same venue was then abandoned without a ball being played.

Speaking after the abandoned match against Australia, Buttler said the England players were eager to leave. The 32-year-old conceded that while being one of the teams to play the final game of Group 1 is an advantage, their aim at the moment is to beat New Zealand.

He was quoted as saying by the Times of India:

“It could be a small advantage, but to take advantage of it we have to win against New Zealand. Everyone is rested and ready to go. There is also a lot of frustration since the last game. People want to correct this performance So we will train well and look forward to a tough challenge against New Zealand.”

The 2010 T20 World Champions still have games to play against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. They will be confident of beating the Lankans, whom they beat by 26 points in the last edition in 2021.

Buttler also felt Friday’s elimination meant they had more time to focus on their next game and recover from their loss to Ireland. He added:

“I think it probably worked both ways in our favor. That we had some time to digest it and let it hurt and kind of deal with it and get over it. Of course that was a Huge opportunity and we needed total focus and attention, so you would have moved on quickly. Now we have a few days. If people need to take care of it more, you can take care of it.

England will then face New Zealand on Tuesday November 1 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
