Suspended Tory MP accused of misusing campaign funds to pay ‘bad guys’ – POLITICO
In a statement to The Times, Menzies said: “I strongly dispute the allegations made against me. I have fully complied with all reporting rules. As an investigation is ongoing, I will not comment further.
A Conservative Party spokesperson said: “The Conservative Party is investigating allegations made about an MP. This process is rightly confidential. The party takes all allegations seriously and will always investigate all matters referred to it.
Menzies had the Tory whip removed. The MP has represented the safe Conservative seat of Fylde in Lancashire since 2010. In 2019 he won a majority of more than 16,000 votes.
More than a dozen Conservative MPs have lost their whip posts since the 2019 general election, reducing the government’s active majority to 49.
Asked about these claims Thursday morning, Defense Secretary Grant Shapps told LBC: “What I understand is that additional information was revealed yesterday, this is a conversation between the Chief Whip and the MP concerned.”
“In all areas of life, there will be people who go off the rails” Shapps told Radio 4 in a separate interview. “It seems to me that there is potentially someone who is quite troubled in the mix here,” he told Times Radio.
