SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB / WSHM) – One person has died following a shooting involving an officer in Springfield.

Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood said around 8:30 a.m. Sunday officers were called to the Liberty and Cass Street neighborhood over a report of a man pulling a knife at a victim.

Police arrived and located someone who matched the description given to police in the 100 block of Genesee Street.

“The suspect, an adult male, then stabbed one of the two police officers in the face after being repeatedly ordered to drop the gun,” Clapprood said.

The suspect then allegedly charged the officers with the knife in his hand and the officer who had been stabbed fired two shots with his service weapon. First aid was provided immediately and the suspect was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Clapprood added that the injured officer was also taken to Baystate Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The two agents who intervened on the scene were placed on paid administrative leave.

The investigation into the shooting involving an officer is being conducted by the Springfield Police Department Detective Office and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office.
