Sushmita Sen Shares Throwback Photo As She Celebrates 29 Years Of Winning Miss Universe, Says ‘It Makes Me Cry’

Sushmita Sen, the beauty queen turned actress, competed against contestants from 77 countries around the world and became the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe title in 1994. That same year, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was crowned Miss World .

Sharing the photo, Sushmita wrote, “This photo is exactly 29 years old, taken by the epic man and photographer #prabuddhadasgupta. In the brutality of this photo, he beautifully captured an 18-year-old me…with a smile, he said, do you realize you are the first Miss Universe I photographed…I proudly added that this is actually the very first Miss Universe from INDIA.”

“The privilege of representing and winning for my homeland is such a profound honor, it brings me to tears of joy even today…29 years later!!! I celebrate and remember this day with great pride as the “history bears witness, INDIA won Miss Universe for the very first time on May 21, 1994 in Manila #philippines,” the caption continues.

Shortly after dropping the post, fans flooded the comments section and dropped congratulatory messages for the actor. “You are a powerhouse…” one user commented. Another fan wrote, “You will always be the BEST MISS UNIVERSE.”

“Happy 29th anniversary of becoming Miss Universe. May you always be happy,” one user wrote. Several fans dropped several red heart emoticons in the comments section. “Thank you all for the love, kindness and the most beautiful messages. … cherished forever!!! Meanwhile, work-wise, Sushmita will next be seen in Aarya Season 3 which will air on the OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar. Apart from that, she also has “Taali” in her chat which is based on the life of transgender Shreegauri Sawant. She was one of the applicants in the 2013 National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) case, in which the Supreme Court recognized a transgender person as the third gender.

Sushmita suffered cardiac arrest in February and later underwent angioplasty. The Aarya actor informed her fans via social media that she had been diagnosed with a 95% blockage in her main artery. The actor has since updated his health details on Instagram. During one of his live sessions, Sushmita asked the younger generation to have their heart checked at regular intervals.
