Suryakumar set to return as Mumbai look to bounce back against top-flight Rajasthan

Mumbai Indians (MI) will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss when they face Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Game 9 of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Saturday .

Both teams enter the game after contrasting fortunes in their tournament openers. Mumbai had Delhi on the ropes, reducing them to 72/5, but ultimately failed to defend their tally of 177. Rajasthan, meanwhile, were the only team so far in the tournament to earn the first strike after knocking Hyderabad out of the game to register a 61-point win.

Mumbai got off to a good start against Delhi Capitals (DC) as Ishan Kishan’s 81 didn’t come out of just 48 balls and Rohit Sharma’s solid 41 gave them a good platform and the youngster Tilak Varma (22 from 15 balls) made a blistering debut to give the team a competitive 177/5 total in the opening innings.

The bowling attack got off to a good start as Basil Thampi (3/35) and Murugan Ashwin (2/14) cut the DC to 72/5 in 10 overs. However, they were unable to cope later with Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav who plundered 75 runs from just 30 balls to gallop to victory with 10 balls remaining.

The five-time champions will be delighted with their batting offense which will be further bolstered by the return of Suryakumar Yadav who is available after recovering from a finger injury. However, they will want a much improved bowling display, especially after premium pacer Jasprit Bumrah (0/43) and Daniel Sams (0/57) both went wicketless and fled.

Rajasthan, meanwhile, beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their opener scoring 210/6 after being batted first. While Jos Butter and youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a good platform, it was captain Sanju Samson (55 from 27 balls), Devdutt Padikkal (41 from 29 balls) and Shimron Hetmyer (32 from 13 balls) who had the most impressed.

The RR bowling offense was not going to be overshadowed by their batting counterparts as Trent Boult (2/23), Prasidh Krishna (2/16) and Yuzvendra Chahal (3/22) reduced SRH to 78/6 after 16 overs. SRH looked set for a massive loss, but a whirlwind 40-for-14 ball from Washington Sundar helped limit the damage.

The Royals entered the tournament with one of the most evenly matched sides on paper and a solid showing in their opener only cemented the early favorites tag they earned.

MI vs RR Team News:

MI Team News: The Mumbai Indians will be boosted by the return of mid-range specialist Suryakumar Yadav who missed their tournament opener due to a hairline fracture he suffered while on international duty.

News from the RR team: The Rajasthan Royals could be without Nathan Coulter-Nile who left the field with an injury in their last game. James Neesham could be brought in to replace the Australian.

MI vs RR pitch ratio: The DY Patil stadium provides good bounce for bowlers and that’s something that spinners have been able to exploit to make life difficult for hitters. However, the two games were very different affairs with RR vs PBKS with a total of 413 runs scored but the next game saw KKR knocked out for just 128 which RCB chased with just 3 wickets and 4 balls to spare.

Where to watch live: The match starts at 3:30 p.m. IST on Saturday, April 2. The games will be broadcast live on the Star Sports Network. Viewers can also tune in to the action through the Disney+ Hotstar app.

Best MI vs RR Fantasy League Picks:

Best batting picks: Ishan Kishan seems a no-brainer as MI’s record signing looked in unstoppable form during his unbeaten 81* from 48 balls last game. Sanju Samson also looked in great form as he scored a blazing half-century (55 on 27 balls) at a strike rate of 203.70. Devdutt Padikkal would also be another smart choice as the hitter looked calm despite changing his stance from hitting to no. 4 as he scored a fluid 41 on 29 balls.

Top All-Round Picks: Daniel Sams went wicketless last game and was also MI’s most expensive pitcher, but the versatile Aussie could learn from that experience and turn things around. Ravichandran Ashwin could be a useful choice as he can be backed up to score and also looked on pace against SRH.

Best Bowling Picks: Prasidh Krishna (2/16) played superbly in his last game and looks likely to continue in this rich form. Yuzvendra Chahal (3/22) also looked on top of her game and will look to exploit the extra rebound on offer to confuse batters.
