Surveillance probes Kerry’s secret negotiations with his Chinese counterpart

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) investigates the work of the President’s Special Climate Envoy (SPEC) John Kerry in the Biden administration and his climate negotiations with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Comer sent his letter to Kerry on Thursday informing him that there is now a formal investigation into the position he holds and his actions after failing to respond to other inquiries sent during the last Congress. Kerry, who is believed to have led climate talks with his Chinese counterpart, holds a cabinet-level position in the Biden administration that required Senate confirmation.
“To date, you have not responded to any of our requests. Yet you continue to engage in activities that could undermine our economic health, circumvent congressional authority, and threaten foreign policy under the guise of climate defense,” Comer added.
Kerry was appointed to the position, which did not previously exist, at the start of the Biden administration. But it is housed at the State Department with an annual budget, according to Fox News, estimated at $13.9 million and 45 employees. However, Kerry sits on the National Security Council as well as Biden’s cabinet. Comer’s letter stated:
The Committee requests documents and information to understand your role and ensure the necessary transparency on the SPEC and its activities. As a member of the President’s cabinet, you must represent the interests of the United States. Your statements, however, consistently show a disregard for US national security and taxpayer dollars.
The letter also acknowledges that Kerry has “continued to downplay the CCP’s human rights abuses and antagonism to the United States while promoting climate negotiations that the CCP doesn’t even seem interested in participating in,” in addition to his recent notion that “the behavior of the CCP should be decoupled from our attempts to reach climate agreements.
Comer ultimately requests a slew of documents and information — including office activities, expenses and staffing — starting January 20, 2021, to be delivered within the next two weeks, after noting that Kerry’s office “continue to ignore requests for information”. and the committee wants to “allow a long overdue review” of its office.
