Supporters of Melissa Lucio hold rallies across the country days before scheduled execution

HOUSTON, Texas — Supporters spent Saturday holding rallies in 16 cities across the United States in an attempt to save the life of Melissa Lucio.

Lucio is on death row after being convicted of murdering his 2-year-old daughter Mariah in South Texas in 2007.

At Saturday’s rallies, organizers plan to collect signatures from the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles as well as Texas Governor Greg Abbott Monday in Austin.

Later, Lucio said the child fell down a flight of stairs days before paramedics took him to hospital.

Lucio’s execution is scheduled for April 27.

Governor Abbott could intervene and delay the execution. He could also grant clemency if the majority of the state Pardons and Parole Board votes to do so.
