Sunil Chhetri wins AIFF Men’s Footballer of the Year for record seventh time

Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri received the AIFF Male Footballer of the Year award on Tuesday, while Manisha Kalyan received the honor of Female Footballer of the Year. Chhetri had previously received the honor in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018-19.

“Sunil was our top scorer, scoring five goals, and also the SAFF Cup Player of the Tournament,” said Igor Stimac. “Furthermore, he led from the front in scoring four goals in three games in the third round of AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in Calcutta. His commitment, leadership, discipline and hard work have been impressive in good times and bad.

For many years, Chhetri was the focal point of the Indian football team. Most recently, he helped India qualify for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, which will take place in June the following year.

The winner of the Emerging Women’s Footballer of the Year award from the previous campaign was Manisha Kalyan, who won the 2021-22 AIFF Women’s Footballer of the Year award.

“Manisha has performed exceptionally well for the national team and also for his club,” said Thomas Dennerby. “She scored goals and also assisted regularly.

“Boasting excellent speed and a good dribbler, she has the potential to play in bigger leagues in the future. She is young and still developing, but she has been our best player,” added Dennerby .

Manisha has just signed for Apollon Ladies, a Cypriot team that won the 2020-21 Cypriot Premier League and will take part in the 2022-23 UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying stages.

Martina Thokchom and Vikram Pratap Singh, respectively, have been named Male and Female Emerging Footballers of the Year for 2021-22.

Vikram Pratap Singh has scored three goals in 22 Indian Super League games, making a significant contribution to Bombay City F.C.triumph last season. Additionally, he was a key member of the Islanders in the AFC Champions League and contributed significantly to India’s success in the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup qualifiers by scoring one goal.

In women’s football, 17-year-old Martina is one of India’s promising midfielders. She’s been a regular since receiving her first cap for the senior India team. The Manipur teenager has also played admirably for the Indian Arrows in the Indian Women’s League (IWL).
