Sunak and Starmer criticize Farage’s claim that EU and NATO ‘provoked’ Ukraine invasion – POLITICO

Starmer told reporters that Farage’s comments were “disgraceful”, adding that Russia is solely responsible for the invasion of Ukraine.

“Whoever comes to Parliament must be very clear that Russia is the aggressor, that Putin bears responsibility and that we stand with Ukraine, as we have since the beginning of this conflict “, did he declare. “Parliament has spoken with one voice on this subject since the start of the conflict. »

Farage made the comments in an interview with the BBC’s Panorama program on Friday evening, ahead of the UK’s July 4 general election. On the programme, Farage was called out in a social media post he sent as Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, in which he claimed the conflict “was a consequence of the expansion of the EU and NATO.

Asked on Friday whether he maintained these views, Farage said he had been warning for decades about the growing overreach of the military alliance and the EU.

“We provoked this war,” Farage said. “Of course, it’s his (Putin’s) fault. He used what we did.

His comments sparked a wave of criticism from Sunak and Starmer, including from Labor defense spokesman John Healey, who said the comments “reveal the true face of Nigel Farage: an apologist of Putin to whom the security of our nation should never be entrusted.”

Former Conservative defense secretary Ben Wallace compared him to “a pub bore we all met at the end of the bar” in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“I am one of the few personalities who has been consistent and honest about the war with Russia,” Farage said on social network X on Friday evening. “Putin was wrong to invade a sovereign nation, and the EU was wrong to expand eastward. The sooner we realize this, the closer we will come to ending war and establishing peace. »
