Swanstrom noted that 70% of travelers to Huntsville are business travelers, while only 30% are leisure travelers.

Nor is the news improving statewide, with Alabamians paying some of the highest rates in the country. West Virginia ranked first in the survey for the most expensive flights at $419.27 per ticket. Vermont came second and Alabama third at $410.93.

Swanstrom told that there are several ways to avoid higher airfares, including:

  • Plan your flights three to six months in advance
  • Be flexible on dates
  • Compare the prices
  • Note that flight fares are cheaper on Fridays and Sundays

The survey, conducted by NetCredit, averaged flight costs from airports statewide and then compared the region’s average local salary to average domestic flight prices.
