Steven Gerrard insists “it’s almost not good enough” for Aston Villa despite a dominant performance in their 1-0 FA Cup loss to Manchester United on Monday night.

The Liverpool legend returned to Old Trafford and led by example, watching Stretford End as they hooted him to the dugout, before his side controlled much of the game.

Villa may have had the misfortune of being excluded from the competition, having dominated United for much of the meeting.

VAR found itself at the center of even more controversy as a long review refused Danny Ings to equalize, as the visitors were guilty of wasting plenty of chances.

It took more than three and a half minutes to decide that an offside Jacob Ramsey hampered Edinson Cavani in preparation for Ings’ disallowed goal.

And while Gerrard made no apologies for the loss, the Villa boss admitted the delay could have killed his team’s momentum.

He told talkSPORT: “I’ve been told a couple of different things. From what I understand, JJ may have come from an offside position. Maybe it was for the OR.

“What is disappointing for me is that we are in a rhythm, that we dominate the game and it takes three and a half minutes to make a decision.

“We can debate and talk about it as much as you want, the referees and the VAR have made a decision and that is against us.

“But the reality is we’ve done enough tonight to score at least two or three, in my opinion.

“I thought the performance was good enough to at least take Man United into extra time. So there are a lot of positive points.

“But the reality is, it was almost enough. This is almost not good enough for Aston Villa. It’s not good enough for me.

“We have to close that gap because when we do, we’ll be a good team. “
