talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara has dismissed suggestions Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne is the Premier League’s greatest midfielder as ‘ridiculous’.
While Jason Cundy thinks the Belgian ‘could be one of the greatest midfielders this country has seen’, O’Hara insists Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is the best of the best – above by Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard.
Belgium international De Bruyne gave a first-half Nations League masterclass on Thursday, scoring and setting up a goal in his country’s 2-1 win over Wales.
The City star’s performance was so good that Cundy believes he now sits firmly among the greatest midfielders to ever play in the Premier League, and perhaps the best of all time.
“I think Kevin De Bruyne could become the best midfielder this country has ever seen,” the former Chelsea defender told Sports Bar on Thursday.
However, for her co-anchor O’Hara, Cundy’s shout was way off the mark.
“Ridiculous.” O’Hara replied in response.
“There have been so many amazing players in the Premier League. You just think [that] because you see it now.

“You don’t look back at the great midfielders who have been in the Premier League.”
O’Hara played in the English top flight with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves, playing against some of the best players in league history.
But there is one icon that stands out for O’Hara among the host of world-class talent he has faced – Liverpool legend and current Aston Villa manager Gerrard.
“Gerrard is for me the best midfielder the Premier League has ever seen,” continued O’Hara.
“I played against Scholes, I played against Gerrard, I played against Lampard. For me, Gerrard was on a different planet than any other player I walked on a football pitch with.
“Steven Gerrard, he was incredible, he was a machine.
“I walked off the pitch when I played against him and thought, ‘Oh my word, I ran into a player I couldn’t approach in any form of play.
“Head, crossing, overtaking, strength, decision making, awareness, pace, ability – he had it all.
“He carried the club [Liverpool] on the back for how many years?
“De Bruyne is an incredible player and he will go down as one of the Premier League’s greatest – but not the greatest.
“The greatest midfielder the Premier League has ever seen in Steven Gerrard. Without a shadow of a doubt.
“And Scholes, Lampard, Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira, they are all above De Bruyne. You can’t say De Bruyne is the best when you have these five midfielders in front of him!
