Steve Bannon predicts what will happen if Trump is indicted
Podcaster and right-wing political strategist Steve Bannon predicted on Saturday what would happen if former President Donald Trump is impeached, as is widely expected, in New York next week.
Posting on his Truth Social social media platform, Trump – who is currently campaigning for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination – said on Saturday he would be charged on Tuesday. The release follows media reports that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office was coordinating with law enforcement regarding the former president’s arrest.
Bragg investigated Trump’s alleged campaign finance breach related to a “silent” $130,000 payment in 2016 to adult entertainer Stephanie Clifford, better known by her stage name Stormy Daniels. The New York investigation appeared to intensify in recent weeks as close associates of Trump reportedly testified, and the former president himself was asked to appear before the grand jury considering the evidence.
Bannon, who previously served as Trump’s 2016 campaign CEO and then White House adviser, responded to news of the impending indictment in a Gettr post. He suggested that criminally indicting the former president would only serve to benefit Trump politically.
“TRUMP WINS IN HISTORIC LANDSLIDE, SAVE THE NATION…(sic),” Bannon wrote. The post included a screenshot of the same sentiment expressed by billionaire Twitter owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
“If that happens, Trump will be re-elected in a landslide victory,” Musk tweeted.
In a previous Getter article, Bannon wrote, “Two systems of justice — won (sic) established to get Trump and MAGA…focused on destroying Trump and MAGA…”
Newsweek contacted Bannon and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office via email for comment. Spokespersons for the district attorney’s office have previously declined to comment on the case to other media.
“THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE AND FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY NEXT WEEK. PROTEST, TAKE BACK OUR NATION!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He reiterated his calls for a protest by his supporters later on Saturday.
“THEY ARE KILLING OUR NATION WHILE WE SIT AND WATCH. WE MUST SAVE AMERICA! PROTEST, PROTEST, PROTEST!!!” he wrote.
The posts have raised concerns among some analysts that Trump supporters could instigate a riot similar to what happened on January 6, 2021. During this protest, many Trump supporters violently attacked the US Capitol in an apparent effort to disrupt President Joe Biden’s official campaign certification. college win.
Trump remains under investigation by the Justice Department regarding the events of January 6 and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Some legal analysts believe he will face federal indictment related to the investigation.
Despite concerns from a number of commentators, others do not believe Trump supporters will respond with violence.
“Even people who are stupid enough to continue supporting Trump aren’t stupid enough to hold another January 6,” said Ann Coulter, a right-wing pundit who previously supported Trump. Newsweek in a Saturday email.
Trump and his allies argue that the investigation and possible indictment in New York are politically motivated. They argue that Democrats are working through the court system in an effort to prevent Trump from winning in 2024 and suppress his political movement.
Bragg, a Democrat, and analysts who support an indictment, said no one is above the law, regardless of political status. The district attorney said his investigation was just following the facts. If Trump is indicted, it will be the first time in US history that a former president has been criminally charged.
