Steinmeier sets out the conditions for the success of peace initiatives on Ukraine | ukraine news

Any peace initiative can only achieve its goal if the mediators are ready to talk to Kyiv.

This was stated by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who commented on the upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Moscow, reports a correspondent of Ukrinform.

“I cannot predict the outcome of the negotiations in Moscow. I can only say that every peace initiative, regardless of its origin, will succeed only if there is also a willingness to talk with the Ukrainians, with the President of Ukraine “Steinmeier said.

He “wishes” that China could play a constructive role. But, added the German leader, it is necessary to understand what a just peace means. This means, first of all, making it clear who is the aggressor and who is the victim in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Previously, the German president had questioned Beijing’s willingness to act as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia. Commenting on China’s release of its 12-point vision for resolving the conflict, he said: “Any constructive proposal that brings us closer to a just peace is welcome. Does China, a world power, want to play such a constructive role? That remains a question. If so, China should in any case speak not only to Moscow, but also to Kyiv,” Steinmeier said, recalling that China was not among the countries that condemned Russia’s aggression against Russia. United Nations General Assembly or supported the resolution calling on Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine.

As reported, Xi Jinping is expected to visit Moscow from March 20-22.
