Stefanik says FDA was notified of formula shortage in February

The Biden administration has been aware of the threat of a national baby formula shortage for ‘months,’ House Republican conference speaker Elise Stefanik (R-NY) told Breitbart News – same day , President Biden claimed that only “mind readers” could have anticipated the crisis.

Asked on Friday whether his administration could have taken action sooner to avert the current infant formula supply crisis, Biden replied, “If we had been better mind readers, I guess we could have.”

“We acted as quickly as the problem appeared to us,” he continued, adding, “we need to act carefully and quickly because we need to ensure that what we are getting is, in fact, a first-class product. order – that is why the [Food and Drug Administration] must go through the process.

The White House also announced on Friday that invoking the Defense Production Act to produce infant formula amid the shortage is “on the table.”

But Rep. Stefanik told Breitbart News in an extensive interview Friday that Biden was “asleep at the switch” and that the FDA had known about a looming baby formula shortage for more than three months — at least since that time. she reached out to warn them in February.

“They’ve known it’s been a problem for months. I sounded the alarm and contacted the FDA in February of this year, after the recall of the Sturgis, Michigan, [Abott Nutrition] manufacturing plant, and we have received no substantive response from the FDA. There was absolutely no plan from this administration on how to fix this supply chain issue, which has now created even more of a crisis,” Stefanik said.

She compared this administration’s response to the infant formula crisis to the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed - where the FDA, working with private companies, produced a COVID vaccine within a short timeframe. accelerated by reducing regulations and reducing the approval process.

“If you compare Joe Biden’s failure to President Trump’s success in cutting red tape from the FDA in terms of the warp speed of the operation – Joe Biden fell asleep at the switch.”

House Republicans — including Rep. Stefanik — sent a letter this week to the president asking for specific answers on how the administration will work to increase the supply of infant formula. Stefanik told Breitbart News that she is also working on legislation requiring the FDA to have a faster timeline to resolve supply chain issues.

“House Republicans introduced the Formula Act, and I’m also working on legislation that requires the FDA, when there’s a recall or a problem at a manufacturing facility, to have a much shorter time frame to find a alternative supply chain or get it back up and running,” Stefanik said.

Stefanik then lambasted the Biden administration amid reports that formula milk is being sent to illegal immigrants who entered the country at the southern border, while US citizens find empty shelves in their local grocery stores.

“Sending taxpayer-paid infant formula to the southern border for illegal immigrants, while American families, American babies, are going without, that’s also unacceptable,” Stefanik said.

Stefanik called the situation “heartbreaking” as she herself found empty shelves while looking to buy formula for her young son in her upstate New York district.

“I can tell you that as a new mom, there’s nothing more heartbreaking than wondering if you’re going to be able to feed your baby,” Stefanik told Breitbart News.
