Stefanik joins McCarthy in backing Cheney’s main Republican challenger

FIRST ON FOX: On Friday, House Republican Conference Speaker Elise Stefanik of New York endorsed Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney’s main opponent, Harriet Hageman.

The endorsement illustrates another shift away from Cheney by the House GOP Caucus, after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., threw his endorsement behind Hageman on Thursday.

“I am proud to support Harriet Hageman in her race to unseat Liz Cheney,” Stefanik said in a press release obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital. “House Republicans were ready for a change when I took over as conference chair, and it’s abundantly clear that Wyoming families are too.”

After once serving in Stefanik’s role as House Republican Conference Speaker, Cheney angered some of his fellow Republicans by criticizing former President Donald Trump for his false claims about stealing the election from 2020 and for her actions around the Capitol Riot of January 6, 2021. She serves as Vice Chair of the House January 6 Committee, in defiance of Republican leadership.

“Liz Cheney abandoned her constituents to become a far-left Pelosi puppet,” she continued. “Liz unfortunately belongs to a president of MSNBC or CNN, not Congress representing Wyoming – a state that voted for President Trump by more than forty points.”

“Harriet is a true America First patriot who will restore the voice of the people of Wyoming that was long forgotten by Liz Cheney,” Stefanik added.

Trump endorsed Hageman last year.

“I am honored and grateful to have the support of Rep. Elise Stefanik, who is an excellent representative of her own constituents and a fantastic chair of the House Republican Conference,” Hageman said. “She’s proof that it’s possible to fight for your principles in Washington, DC while staying true to what your constituents want you to do.”

“It’s only fitting that I receive the endorsement of the congresswoman who replaced Liz Cheney as Republican Conference President, because this illustrates exactly how Cheney abdicated her responsibilities,” the Wyoming Republican continued. “In Wyoming, we only have one member of the House of Representatives, so we have to get it right. Cheney turned his back on us and used the congressional seat we gave him to continue his own personal goals.

“At the same time, she helped Speaker Nancy Pelosi hurt the Republican Party as a willing pawn of the Democrats,” she added. “When I am a congressman from Wyoming, I will always remember who sent me to Congress, and I will always fight for what is best for our great state.”

“I’m proud to support Harriet Hageman for Congress,” McCarthy, R-California, said in a statement Thursday. The statement backing a primary challenger for a longtime lawmaker is a rare move for a congressional party leader.

“Raised on a family ranch outside of Fort Laramie, Harriet and her family have resided in Wyoming for generations,” he added. “The most successful representatives in Congress are focused on the needs of their constituents, and throughout her career, Harriet has championed America’s natural resources and helped the people of Wyoming reject burdensome and onerous government excesses. .”
