Starmer ‘fully confident’ Angela Rayner will be cleared by police probe into tax dispute – POLITICO

She listed the property as her main residence, making her exempt from capital gains, but the Mail on Sunday uncovered evidence suggesting she may have resided in a separate house owned by her then-husband.

The Stockport property was also listed as its main address on the electoral roll.

Greater Manchester Police said on Friday they had launched an investigation into the Labor Party’s deputy leader following allegations she gave false information to the Electoral Commission about her primary residence before becoming an MP.

Police had previously refused to open an investigation, but a “re-assessment was carried out” after Conservative Deputy Speaker James Daly passed them new information, including a statement from a former neighbor.

Rayner declined to answer substantive questions on the subject, describing the dispute as an invasion of his privacy.

Many Labor MPs and shadow ministers have called the story a smear concocted by the Conservative campaign headquarters.

Starmer made the comments during a visit to the Barrow-on-Furness shipyard, where he committed a future Labor government to maintaining Britain’s nuclear deterrent, which he described as the “foundation” of Britain’s defense.

He also pledged to spend 2.5% of UK GDP on defense if his party wins the next election.
