Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne completed a first double-ton test and shared a record-breaking partnership with fellow centurion Dhananjaya de Silva as the hosts crammed on points against Bangladesh in a wicket-less day four. a first test which seems about to end in a draw.

Karunaratne (234no) turned his 11th century testing into a first brace, hitting 200 on 387 balls in an unbroken fourth stand of 322 with Dhananjaya (154no), a record for any wicket in a test match at Kandy.

The partnership has surpassed the 258 Australians that Shaun Marsh and Michael Hussey pitted against Sri Lanka in September 2011.

Sri Lanka started the day on 229-3 but closed on 512-3 after adding 283 points on Saturday’s play, which was interrupted by poor light.

The hosts now follow Bangladesh by just 29 points, with the visitors scoring 541-7 in their opening innings after choosing to play at bat.

Bangladeshi skipper Mominul Haque (127) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (163) scored tons, while Tamim Iqbal (90), Mushfiqur Rahim (68 no) and Liton Das (50) added half centuries.

Three of Kandy Tests’ six highest partnerships came in that match, with Shanto putting in 242 with Mominul and 144 with Tamim for Bangladesh, before Karunaratne and Dhananjaya got huge for Sri Lanka.

The two-game test series ends at the same location starting Thursday.
