Everton left-back Lucas Digne has hinted he was being forced out of the club after falling out with Rafael Benitez over team tactics. The Frenchman is set to leave Goodison Park and is expected to join Aston Villa after the Spain boss suggested the defender go ahead of the team.
Lucas Digne has joined Everton in the summer of 2018 from Barcelona for an initial £ 18million and has since established himself as a key player in the team. Moreover, he has consistently proven his attacking prowess in the Premier League in recent years. Yet while injuries and various other issues plagued him, the Frenchman still made 127 appearances for the Merseyside club while also scoring six goals and registering 20 assists in all competitions.
However, the 28-year-old is now heading for the exits after falling out with Everton boss Rafael Benitez over team tactics. The Spaniard had suggested that Digne should focus on himself rather than the team’s efforts and subsequently sidelined him from the starting line-up since the 4-1 home loss to Liverpool on December 1.
Now reports have indicated that Aston Villa secured the signing of Digne as they beat the competition from people like Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham and the Frenchman is expected to undergo his medical examination to finalize the transfer. Digne expressed his joy at serving the Everton faithful while also hinting that Benitez had forced him out of Goodison Park.
“Thank you for three and a half years in blue. From day one the Evertonians received me with a lot of warm feelings, and I am forever grateful to them. I loved being part of the Everton family. always worked hard to give back to fans on and off the pitch. Only a year ago I signed a new contract with the ambition to stay at this club for a long time, “Digne said in an Instagram post.
“Everything must have an end. I just didn’t expect it to end this way. But I won’t go into a war of words with anyone. Sometimes it only takes one outside person to destroy a beautiful love story, ”he added.
