Soldier Field installs new Bermuda grass ahead of Bears season start – NBC Chicago

Soldier Field installs new bermuda turf on the field originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Soldier Field grass is replaced with Bermuda grass less than a week before the Chicago Bears open their season against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

ASM Global, the company that manages the conditions on the pitch, planned to install the turf directly before the first week after concerts by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Bunny and Rammstein wrapped up at the stadium the previous weekend.

The new Bermuda grass is supposed to have the ability to be played immediately after it is poured.

The grass in the field was usually turfed with Kentucky bluegrass, which typically thrives in cooler weather and recovers and regrows faster after wear. Bermuda grows in warm weather and is more hardy than Kentucky. Grass may be re-turfed in the final weeks of the season with Kentucky Bluegrass as it holds up better in cold weather.

Soldier Field grass has been an ongoing problem for years. He received multiple complaints from players, coaches and NFLPA President JC Tretter.

A plethora of dry spots and holes were left from the weekend gig before the Bears’ only preseason home game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Images of the poor conditions on the ground bombarded Twitter with the putrid sight. The NFL says it passed inspection and regulations on which to play, but it still caught the attention of many, including opposing head coach Andy Reid.

“Much better than my high school field,” Reid said after the game. “Not a lot.”

On the other hand, sophomore quarterback Justin Fields mentioned the state of the field as an “advantage” to him and the offense due to their awareness of the state of the field. Let’s hope they use their insight as a strategy when they open their season on Sunday, Sept. 11 against the 49ers.
