The Seahawks (8-1) are flying high after winning four of five games against Bucknell and Marist over the weekend. UNCW outscored opponents 32-15 in five games for its best start in school history.
Canisius (3-3) travels east after splitting six games at the USC Upstate Tournament in Spartanburg, SC to start his season.
Senior Janel Gamache was at the forefront of the Seahawks’ resurgence early in the season. The Exeter, RI product was named Colonial Athletic Association Softball Player of the Week for the second time after hitting .438 with two doubles, a home run and 7 RBIs in five games.
On Saturday, Gamache went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs while throwing a five-inning shutout with six strikeouts against the Red Foxes.
The Seahawks’ mighty bats will be put to the test against second Megan Giese, who struck out 18 in 18.2 innings for the Golden Griffins. The right-hander held opponents to an average of .164 in five appearances to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference pitcher of the week award.
The UNCW pitching staff, which ranks 36th in the nation with a 1.88 ERA per team, will watch Canisius sophomore Gianna Fazzolari in the batter’s box. The Newfane, NY product was named MAAC Player of the Week after hitting .353 with four homers and 7 RBIs.
Teams will have the day off Thursday before joining NC Central in a three-team weekend tournament beginning Friday, February 25. The Seahawks play for the first time at 4:30 p.m. Friday against the Eagles.
