He’s in Rhode Island shooting a movie about a burger joint, but Kenan Thompson dined at Rhody’s iconic hot dog joint.

Filming for ‘Good Burger 2’ begins in Rhode Island on May 18 – and Boston Casting is looking for extras

Around 11 p.m. Saturday — a time when the “SNL” GOAT typically gears up for the show at Studio 8H starting at 30 Rockefeller — he appeared in the Olneyville New York system in Providence.

Alas, he didn’t order three all-you-can-eat with fries and latte – he melted the tuna and coke.

The SNL star, who is filming “Good Burger 2” in Rhode Island, is “not a meat guy,” says Olneyville owner Greg Stevens. “I think it was more about the story, about late night Providence. We are known for our late night meals.

For the uninitiated, Olneyville System sausages, a late-night Rhody staple since 1946, have a reputation — like Del’s lemonade or Narragansett beer — as iconic Rhode Island. (In other words, fans can buy three with fries and coffee and milk stickers.)

Stevens, who is a fourth-generation owner and has worked in Olneyville for 50 years, said Thompson hung around for a while. “He’s an ordinary guy. He didn’t deny anyone. He was generous in taking pictures,” he said.

“One of my guys, Cliff (Scott), is apparently a real TV guy. He knew all his stuff. So they talked a lot.

In fact, Stevens said, the photo of Scott and Thompson posted on Olneyville’s Instagram page was taken on Thompson’s phone: “He took the picture with Cliff and sent it to her.” (Epic.)

Thompson apparently toured the Ocean State on Saturday, starting with delivering coffee and donuts to the Newport, RI, police department with Newport Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong.

“Yeah, we really like coffee and donuts,” the police department posted on Facebook, along with two photos of Thompson.

Thompson and Kel Mitchell began filming “Good Burger 2” in North Providence on May 18. The former Friendly’s restaurant on Mineral Spring Avenue in North Providence, RI has turned into a Good Burger.

Since filming began, the duo have been generous with their time – punching the crowd, signing autographs and taking selfies.

Some 25 years after their 1997 cult classic “Good Burger” – based on their hit sketch of Nickelodeon’s “All That” – Thompson and Kel Mitchell reprise their roles as Dexter (Thompson) and Ed (Mitchell). Steven Feinberg, executive director of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office, previously told Boston.com that Nickelodeon Studios and the Paramount+ movie planned to shoot in Rhody through June 20.

The old Friendly’s is “an anchor place,” Feinberg said, adding that other locations include East Providence, downtown Providence, Warwick and East Greenwich.

The Rhode Island connection? Thompson co-founded Artists For Artists with Rhode Island native film producer John Ryan, Jr.

“A friend of mine, Ed Brady, knows John,” Feinberg previously said. “He said, did you hear they were talking about doing a sequel to ‘Good Burger’? I said, yes, I am aware. He said, well, my friend, John Ryan, Jr. is the producer. Do you want me to connect you? I said, absolutely.

Brady and Ryan are also friends of Stevens from Olneyville. Stevens said the three likely stopped at his restaurant as a final stop on the way home.

“I knew; I know Johnny. They texted me: Hey Greg, we’re coming. I guess (Thompson) did the whole state tour. He went everywhere Saturday, Newport police and everything. So he came in. A super nice guy. Everyone recognized him. We talked about the restaurant, the story.
