Smyly, Gomes and Hoerner help Cubs beat Giants

CHICAGO (AP) –Drew Smyly allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings and Yan Gomes and Nico Hoerner homered in the Chicago Cubs’ 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Friday.

Smyly (6-8) struck out eight and walked two. The southpaw left after Austin Dean hit a field error to start the eighth.

“It’s really nice to feel confident and be in tune with your mechanics and trust your stuff,” Smyly said. “Not all teams have that kind of support.”

Gomes fired a two-point shot to left center in the second to give the Cubs the lead for good. Hoerner fired a two-point flare against Yunior Marte in the sixth to help end a two-game skid and send San Francisco to its fifth straight loss.

After Smyly started in the eighth, Manuel Rodríguez gave up Evan Longoria’s base-laden ground rules double to kill a shutout bid. Brandon Hughes finished the set and worked a clear ninth for his fourth save in eight opportunities.

Giants starter Carlos Rodón (12-8) struck out 11 in 5 1/3 innings. He allowed three hits.

“That pitch, I’d like to get it back,” Rodón said of the slider Gomes knocked out of the park after fouling three pitches to stay in the box. “He fought and got the pitch count up there.”

Giants receiver Austin Wynns left in the top of the sixth after being hit in the helmet by Smyly. The pitch grabbed the left atrium and spun the helmet off Wynns head. After consulting with a coach, the receiver headed for the dugout and was replaced by Joey Bart.

Manager Gabe Kapler said Wynns will be evaluated for concussion symptoms and will not start on Saturday. The team plans to have an extra receiver in town if Wynns isn’t available to pinch or relieve Bart.

Rodón achieved his 10th double-digit batting performance, breaking the club record held by Jason Schmidt and Tim Lincecum. He’s fanned the last five batters he’s faced and struck out at least 10 batters in four of his last five starts.

“It’s a nice little milestone,” Rodón said. “I’m just going to keep going and hopefully see how many we can get.”

Giants: The club placed RHP Dominic Leone (elbow dispute) on the injured list 15 days before the game. Dean was promoted from Triple-A Sacramento to fill the roster spot and made his season debut in left field. … Kapler said he could use a series of relievers in Sunday’s series finale to fill the void left by LHP Alex Wood’s (shoulder) stay on the 15-day injury list.

Cubs: Second baseman Nick Madrigal left the game after the third with a right groin tightness. Manager David Ross says Madrigal will be assessed further tomorrow. … OF Nelson Velázquez (illness) was removed from the squad a few hours before the start and replaced by Michael Hermosillo.

Chicago’s Marcus Stroman (3-6, 3.73) will face fellow right-hander Logan Webb (12-8, 2.89) on Saturday.
