Smith of Texas A&M arrested for DWI, weapons and pot charges

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) – Texas A&M wide receiver Ainias Smith was arrested early Wednesday for drunk driving, illegal carrying of a weapon and possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana, according to the records of Brazos County Jail.

Smith, 21, was arrested by Texas A&M police and taken to Brazos County Jail. He posted $8,000 bond and was released later Wednesday, according to prison records. The records did not indicate whether he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Smith was suspended from the football team per Athletic Department policy after his arrest, according to Texas A&M spokesman Alan Cannon. Cannon added that coach Jimbo Fisher is aware of the situation and is looking into it.

Smith was scheduled to attend SEC Media Days Thursday in Atlanta with Fisher and two other players.

Smith is Texas A&M’s leading receiver after catching 47 catches for 509 yards and six touchdowns last season. He received 1,321 yards with 15 touchdowns in three seasons with the Aggies.
