Slovakian Fico plots to dismantle free press – POLITICO

Shortly after beginning his fourth term as prime minister last fall, Fico and his government stopped communicating with four respected independent media outlets he considered “hostile,” including TV Markíza – the country’s most-watched channel, with 27 percent market share – as well as the daily newspapers Denník N and SME and the news site Aktuality.

Fico’s return to power was accompanied by an “open attack on independent media”, according to Matúš Kostolný, editor-in-chief of Denník N.

“Since the first day after the elections, he has been attacking journalists, calling us rats… Fico has always attacked journalists, but now he is taking an even harder line, calling us enemies and engaging the whole government to do the same,” Kostolný said. .

In 2018, investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová were assassinated, sparking the largest protests in the country since the fall of the communist regime in 1989 and leading to Fico’s resignation as prime minister, halfway through his third term.

According to Kostolný, the tragedy prompted Slovak journalists to fight even harder against state oppression.

“Slovakia still has many independent media and courageous journalists, but Fico works to silence and intimidate them,” Kostolný said. “Having had the experience we had in the 1990s under (then Prime Minister Vladimír) Mečiar, I think we are better prepared today than our Hungarian colleagues, for example.”
