Slovak government targets media again after Fico shooting – POLITICO

The ruling coalition has criticized Slovak media since coming to power and is transforming public service channel RTVS into a state institution under greater government control after Fico declared its coverage “insufficiently objective”.

Government officials also boycotted all forms of communication with the daily newspapers Sme and Dennik N, the news site Aktuality and TV Markíza, the most watched channel in Slovakia.

In this hostile climate, commercial television channels Joj and TA3 canceled their political talk shows, followed last weekend by Markíza, which ended its popular weekly debate format “Na Telo” (Difficult Question), led by prominent journalist Michal Kovačič.

Kovačič used the last five minutes of his show on Sunday to explain to viewers what was happening behind the scenes. “Slovakia is currently experiencing a war because of the Orbanization of our television channels,” he began, referring to the illiberal Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

“The future of RTVS is a matter of public debate, but in reality this fight is happening everywhere, quietly and stealthily,” Kovačič said. “If we don’t stop it, it will have disastrous consequences for Slovak democracy.”

In response, the management of TV Markíza announced the “immediate cancellation” of Kovačič’s show, claiming that he had “abused broadcast time to present his personal opinions”.
