The man who died Monday in a skiing accident on Wachusett Mountain has been identified as John Lapato, 67, a resident of Shrewsbury.

The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office identified Lapato on Wednesday, two days after Princeton Ski Resort announced he had died after crashing into a mountainside tree.

Wachusett Mountain previously said ski patrollers responded to Lapato’s crash around 9:25 a.m. Monday. They provided emergency care at the crash site, but Lapato was pronounced dead when they reached the bottom of the mountain.

“The entire Wachusett family mourns this tragic loss,” Wachusett Mountain officials said Monday. “All our thoughts are with the skier’s family and friends.”
