Sixth Memphis police officer fired in connection with Tire Nichols’ death

The Memphis Police Department announced Friday that it has fired a sixth officer from the force after further investigating the death of Tire Nichols last month.

Officer Preston Hemphill “violated multiple department policies,” the police department statement said, including those related to “personal conduct” and “truthfulness.”

Nichols, a 29-year-old black father, died after being beaten by multiple officers on January 7 in Memphis, Tennessee, after a traffic stop. Five officers were fired shortly after the beatings came to light, and the subsequent release of body camera footage further stoked tensions over the police’s heavy-handed tactics.

Hemphill, who is white, joined the department from Memphis in 2018.
