Simon Jordan calls Erling Haaland’s proposed £500,000-a-week wage ‘ridiculous’ and ‘obscene’ amid mooted transfer to Man City

Simon Jordan has reacted furiously to reports that Erling Haaland is earning £500,000 a week with Manchester City.

The Borussia Dortmund striker is set to join the Premier League champions this summer in a deal worth an estimated £63million.

The 21-year-old is expected to follow in the footsteps of his father, Alf-Inge, who played for the club in the early 2000s.

The 21-year-old has become one of the most coveted talents in world football after becoming a lethal striker at Dortmund.

Haaland, who joined German side Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020, has a remarkable 82 goals in 85 games so far. He also helped Dortmund win the DFB-Pokal (German FA Cup) last season.

According to Transfermarkt, his value stands at £135million, so for Man City to sign him for less than half that price could prove to be one of the best signings in their history.

It is understood that a number of clubs wanted to sign him, with his father Alfe-Inge Haaland and agent Mino Raiola reportedly speaking to a number of Europe’s big hitters, including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Latest reports suggest City have agreed deals with Haaland’s representatives which would make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League. One of those conditions includes his salary, which is expected to be half a million pounds a week.

Speaking on White and Jordan, the former Crystal Palace chairman was far from happy when he heard about the figures involved, calling the sums of money “ridiculous” and “obscene”.

“We are already in the territory of the ridiculous level of a comeback for footballers,” Jordan said.

“I don’t blame anyone for making money, people deserve to be successful. And in their field, if they are good at what they do, they should be rewarded.

“But we’re getting into the pay grade of footballers, it’s ridiculous.

“Now I don’t know if it’s £500,000 a week after tax or £500,000 a week before tax, either way we’re getting into obscene money territory.

“Nobody should really want that, we’re throwing these numbers around in a country that has food banks in the ying-yang as if $500,000 a week for a footballer is something we should all accept.

“They’re not worth it, he’s not worth £500,000 a week, and those players who get paid like that aren’t worth it.

“Back when people were making a lot of money, do you know what the key thing was? You had to be really, really, really good.

“And it seems to me now in football you can be quite average and become a multi-multi-millionaire.

“It’s not bitterness, it’s not resentment, I had my time and I made a lot of money, and I was really good at what I did, and I didn’t wasn’t so good at other things, that’s why I cost myself a lot of money.

“In this world of football that sometimes seems to be the case, and not in the case of Erling Haaland, because he is not mediocre.

“But what the $500,000 salary does, it makes a salary of $200,000 feel like an average salary. So someone who is average in the Premier League is paid £10m a year .

“And you have to sit down and pause for a second and walk away, half of these players can only kick with one foot.

“And you look and go, how do you get £10m a year to be an average footballer, that’s what a £500,000 salary does.”

With Pep Guardiola set to sign one of the best players in the world, Jordan doesn’t think Haaland will send the club into the ‘stratosphere’.

“We have a big six in this league that [some of them] made up of Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United, no doubt,” he added.

“And these clubs are not going to sit on their hands and allow these clubs to disappear into the ether.

“Liverpool are on the margins of Manchester City, on the margins. So I look at it and say yes it’s a component [signing Haaland] that Man City don’t have, and it will add to them.

“But I don’t think it will send them into the stratosphere.

“I think Liverpool bought a boy in [Luis] Diaz, it will change the direction of travel for Liverpool.

“So I think there will always be competitiveness [in the league].”
