Sidney Crosby laced up his skates and took to the ice for his 1,000th NHL game on Saturday. He joined 25 other active skaters who have reached that mark, but he made history by being the first to reach the milestone in a Penguins jersey.
He then landed two assists in his team’s 3-2 win over the Islanders, including the primary over game winner Kris Letang.
“Everything from the guys in the ceremony and in the hall and on the ice, I was just completely spoiled,” he said after the game. “So it was a pretty great experience and a day that I will always remember. It was even sweeter that we were able to win.”
His teammates skated for warm-ups in his branded No.87 jersey and joined in his ice skating superstition.
The pre-game ceremony included messages from his family, a silver stick, a watch and a mosaic of the superstar with a photo from each of his matches. It was a little touching.
The ceremony also included videos from current and former teammates and other NHL stars that left Crosby smiling. Here are some of the best.
I want more goals for you, more points, more games … And of course, more Cups.
We want that too, Geno.
