Siblings with terminal illness checked into Stroger Hospital – NBC Chicago

A moving scene unfolded Thursday afternoon outside Stroger Hospital in Chicago as an adult brother and sister battling a terminal illness were handed over to medical staff.

Cesar and Bernice Rueda Silva, who have no papers, both suffer from a condition known as leukodystrophy. The siblings were cared for by their parents until their recent deaths from complications of COVID-19.

Their younger brother, Jesus Rueda, stepped in to care for them alone while working full time.

But Jesus now says he can no longer take care of his brothers and sisters at home.

“I think it’s going to get better or them; they’re going to be treated in the hospital,” Jesus said. “We prayed and I told them to apologize and it was for their own good. I feel really bad. I tried to do everything I could for them.”

Pastor Julie Contreras of United Giving Hope counseled Jesus for several months. She said they had contacted several groups for help, including the Mexican consulate, but so far no one had called them back.

“We take them to the hospital and ask that they be treated with respect and dignity,” Contreras said. “The brother can’t take care of them financially or emotionally. He couldn’t do it anymore. He’s our hero because he was honest with himself that he couldn’t do it anymore. We we need some form of humanitarian legalization now so people can get the health care they need with respect and dignity.”

Once inside, the siblings were placed through the system and admitted.

Stroger Hospital sent NBC 5 an email stating, “Generally, when patients with complex, non-acute medical conditions come to Stroger Hospital, we deal with them until a place of appropriate discharge be identified. Stroger Hospital is an acute care facility and Cook County Health does not operate a long-term care facility.”

Jesus Rueda said his brother and sister are either staying here or being repatriated to Mexico, he just wants to make sure they get the care they need.
