Lady Bowthorpe showed a brilliant turn of the foot in the finals to win the Group 2 Betfair Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket.
Climbing to the back of the seven-rider field by Kieran Shoemark, Nathaniel’s daughter burst into the front on the final half-lap to beat 2/1 market leader Queen Power and close third Lavender’s Blue .
It was a first round of the season for Lady Bowthorpe, who won twice last season, including the first time at Lingfield in a handicap of an 81 mark.
She went on to claim Group 3 glory at Ascot this summer before finding life difficult in top-tier company against Nazeef in her final race of 2020.
But a slight ease of scoring sparked a return to the winner’s circle for the five-year-old mare, who took first place by a header with odds of 6/1.
Betfair responded by reducing the winner to 25/1 against 66/1 for the Lockinge Stakes. Sky Bet goes the same price from 40/1 for Newbury Group One.
Shoemark told ITV Racing: “I feel she’s strengthened again this year – she’s very brave. It’s good for the whole team, they deserve it.
“I feel like she could improve throughout the year. I’m thrilled, it’s always fun to compete on the big stage.”
