Shilese Jones sprints to lead US Gymnastics Championships

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Shilese Jones took the lead at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships on Friday, performing a dynamic bars routine to post a total of 57.200.

The 20-year-old Jones started the competition with an impressive 14.850 during her bars set, the highest score of the night across any event. She rode the momentum through the final three rotations, punctuating the best performance of her elite career with a floor exercise that provided a compelling case that she should make the world championship squad more late this year.

Konnor McClain, whose 14.8 on beam scored the world’s best score in the event in 2022, is second at 56.400. Jordan Chiles, the 2020 Olympic team silver medalist, is third at 56.150 after successfully appealing his floor exercise score, which dropped from 13.750 to 13.950. Kayla DiCello is fourth at 55.950. Jade Carey, gold medalist in floor exercise in Tokyo last summer, is fifth.

The finals are scheduled for Sunday evening.

2021 world championship silver medalist Leanne Wong appeared to land awkwardly on her balance beam run and missed her final two events on floor and vault.
