Sheryl Lee Ralph talks about Abbott Elementary’s whirlwind success

“I said to Quinta, ‘Baby, can’t you just give me a little zush?'” she joked. “I was like gee whiz. Look Ava [Janelle James]! Ava wore all my clothes. Ava has all my hair. And I have one set of sweaters after another.”

Style differences aside, Ralph couldn’t be prouder to see the show highlight the importance of black female creators and artists in Hollywood.

“It’s a lot of broken rocks and broken dirt and pushing through doors that were closed, telling you you’re ‘too dark’ or ‘too that’, [they] I don’t know what to do with you,” she shared. “And then, to come to a moment perfectly created by this young black woman with a vision, I can only look at her and say, ‘Thank God for this moment’ because, I know everything that I’ve been through and those who came with me and before me. I know they’re like, ‘See, there it is. It was all worth it.’
